“Orange Jooj” (Johnstone’s Original Orange Julep) was a forebear of Orange Crush that was produced and bottled in several locations. On two occasions, there were seizures and condemnation of the product for misrepresentation in its labeling. Suggestions that the product was fruit-based were found to be fraudulent. Separate FDA statements from 1919 and 1920 revealed instances of the drink to consist of sugar, glucose, water, flavor, salicylic acid, benzoic acid, and artificial color.” A Louisiana shipment was said to contain “an added deleterious ingredient which might have rendered it injurious to health.”
